OHIO MESOTHELIOMA LAWYERS

Ohio is known as the Buckeye State. The nickname is derived from the Ohio buckeye tree. Ohio links the Northeast to the Midwest. Its northern border is defined by Lake Erie. Ohio has a huge highway network and is within a one-day drive of 50% of North America’s population and 70% of North America’s manufacturing capacity.

As such, Ohio is the headquarters for many manufacturing and industrial entities. Asbestos products were valued for their insulating and fire-retardant properties. Asbestos was employed as the core ingredient for these purposes in numerous industrial and construction projects throughout Ohio.

Ohio’s abundant power plants, steel plants, and oil refineries used great amounts of asbestos materials. Asbestos products were used as insulation for boilers, steam pipes, furnaces, and hot water pipes. Workers at the large energy and manufacturing plants, as well as tradesmen in Ohio’s construction industry, have experienced disproportionate rates of asbestos-related diseases. In the construction sector, brick and stone masons, drywall tapers, painters, and plumbers are particularly susceptible to mesothelioma.

Workers in Ohio’s marine industries and shipyards have also experienced high rates of asbestos disease. Lorain County, home of the American Ship Building Company, once owned by the late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, has the 14th highest mesothelioma mortality rate of any county in the United States. Tragically, Jefferson County, in the eastern part of the state near Pittsburgh, tops Lorain County. The Centers for Disease Control concludes that Jefferson County is the #3 county in the nation with respect to mesothelioma mortality rates.

MESOTHELIOMA IN OHIO

Mesothelioma is a rare, aggressive, and deadly cancer that occurs in the thin layer of tissue that covers the majority of the body’s internal organs. It most often affects the tissue that surrounds the lungs. Sadly, Jefferson County and Lorain County residents experience higher risks of mesothelioma than virtually any other county in the United States. Jefferson County and Lorain County rank #3 and #14, respectively, in malignant mesothelioma mortality rates. The Centers for Disease Control ranks Ohio #7 in the nation in mesothelioma deaths.

Mesothelioma has a lengthy latency period. This means that a person develops mesothelioma long after the initial exposure to asbestos. This period ranges from 10 to 50 years after contact with the asbestos product. As a result, the number of mesothelioma deaths in Ohio will continue.
