MASSACHUSETTS MESOTHELIOMA LAWYERS

Massachusetts was settled in 1620 by the Pilgrims and is located in the New England area of the United States. It is bordered by the states of New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island. The eastern part of the state lies on the Atlantic Ocean.

Boston, Massachusetts, is located on Massachusetts Bay near the mouth of Charles River. The Boston Naval Shipyard in Boston is one of the oldest facilities that has been building and repairing ships for the United States Navy. The shipyard was in operation from 1801 until 1974. Throughout its 174 years in service, the shipyard built over 200 ships for the Navy and repaired thousands of other Naval ships. Shipyards were a major source of asbestos exposure. The Navy heavily used asbestos in building, and repairing ships during the 1900’s. Unfortunately, workers at the shipyard were heavily exposed to asbestos.

The state of Massachusetts also produces naturally-occurring asbestos deposits. At one time, the state had two commercial asbestos mines. The W.R. Grace & Company mine, located in North Cambridge, is particularly famous. This corporation was one of the major players in the asbestos industry whose management was well aware of hazards of asbestos, yet failed to warn or protect their employees from the dangers of asbestos.

Other industries that once flourished in Massachusetts also utilized asbestos products. Massachusetts was home to many factories and mills, especially in the river towns of Lawrence and Lowell. This has resulted in thousands of workers being exposed to asbestos products.

Hundreds of Massachusetts residents have died from mesothelioma or asbestosis over the past 40 years. Because asbestos-related cancers develop decades after exposure, asbestos-related deaths continue to be found among people in Massachusetts. Experts believe that the incidence of mesothelioma will continue to rise for many years before reaching its peak, followed by a gradual decline. Thousands of mesothelioma cases will continue to be diagnosed nationally for many years to come.

MESOTHELIOMA IN MASSACHUSETTS

The high levels of asbestos used in Massachusetts industries have been reflected in the health of Massachusetts workers, hundreds of whom have died from asbestos-related diseases, including mesothelioma. Like other asbestos diseases, mesothelioma has a long latency period. This means that a person usually develops mesothelioma long after the initial exposure to asbestos – usually between 10 and 50 years later.

Due to this latency period, the number of Massachusetts mesothelioma deaths continues to rise even though asbestos is seldom used in Massachusetts today. The most significant risk of exposure today comes from the removal of asbestos containing products particularly when buildings are demolished.

In the 20 year period from 1980-2000, over 600 mesothelioma deaths were reported in Massachusetts.
