INDIANA MESOTHELIOMA LAWYERS

Actor Steve McQueen from Beech Grove, Indiana, is remembered by movie fans for his role in such classic films as the Sand Pebbles, Papillion, and the Great Escape, but his greatest role to society is in raising public awareness of mesothelioma. In 1980, Steve McQueen died from malignant mesothelioma. Although his asbestos exposure is largely unknown, Mr. McQueen served in the U.S. Marine Corps where asbestos was used on military ships and transports. He also was a professional race car driver who would have come into contact with asbestos fire-proof suits and friction products in brakes and clutches.

Heavy industry has been a big part of Indiana’s economy. Asbestos was used in steel foundries, automobile parts manufacturing plants, insulation plants, chemical companies, and power plants.

Tragically, many Indiana workers also brought asbestos home on their clothes without realizing it. These workers and their families are at a heightened risk of mesothelioma.

MESOTHELIOMA IN INDIANA

The high levels of asbestos used in Indiana industries have take their toll on the health of Indiana workers, who have been stricken with mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer of the lining of the lungs and abdomen, which is caused by asbestos exposure.

Like other asbestos diseases, mesothelioma has a long latency period. This means that a person usually develops mesothelioma long after the initial exposure to asbestos – usually between 10 to 50 years later. Due to this latency period, the number of Indiana mesothelioma deaths continues to rise even though asbestos is seldom used in Indiana today.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there were 402 mesothelioma deaths in the state of Indiana between the years 1999 to 2005.
