ALABAMA MESOTHELIOMA LAWYERS

Although Alabama does not have an extensive coastline, a small portion of Alabama located between Mississippi and Florida borders the Gulf of Mexico. The city of Mobile is perfectly situated for the shipping industry where the Alabama Drydock & Shipping Co. has been operating since World War I.

Asbestos was used extensively in United States naval shipyards and commercial shipyards as well. Pipes, valves, boilers, pumps, turbines and other ship equipment were covered with asbestos block, cloth, and pads. Pipe flanges were sealed with asbestos gaskets and valve stems were sealed with asbestos packing. Navy seamen and civilian shipyard workers were exposed to large amounts of asbestos dust while building, overhauling, and repairing ships.

Asbestos was also used in other industries in Alabama. The state has a very large steel industry that used asbestos in the mills and foundries. Alabama’s oil refineries also used large amounts of asbestos. Furthermore, power plants and the chemical industry utilized asbestos to insulate pipes and equipment. Workers in all these industries faced potential asbestos exposure on the job.

Tragically, many Alabama workers also brought asbestos home on their clothes without realizing it. These workers and their families are at a heightened risk of mesothelioma.

MESOTHELIOMA IN ALABAMA

The high levels of asbestos used in Alabama industries and shipyards have taken their toll on the health of Alabama workers, who have contracted the disease mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer of the lining of the lungs and abdomen, which is caused by asbestos exposure.

Like other asbestos diseases, mesothelioma has a long latency period. This means that a person usually develops mesothelioma long after the initial exposure to asbestos – usually between 10 to 50 years later. Due to this latency period, the number of Alabama mesothelioma deaths continues to rise even though asbestos is seldom used in Alabama today.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there were 221 mesothelioma deaths in Alabama from 1999 to 2005.
