Helping Survivors of Adult & Childhood Sexual Abuse Find Justice

The trauma of sexual assault can impact the victim for decades after the abuse occurred. We believe all victims of sex abuse deserve justice and proudly fight alongside survivors everyday to help them achieve it. Sadly, many institutions failed in their duty to protect students, children and customers from the dangers of sexual assault.

We can help.

Changing Laws on Child Sexual Abuse

New state laws across the county, including in California and Hawaii, now allow adult survivors of child sex abuse to seek justice and compensation. Laws mandating short reporting periods have allowed abusers to continue assaulting children. Survivors can bring a claim even if the abuse occurred decades ago, or if a prior lawsuit was filed but dismissed as time-barred. Abusers hid behind positions of authority, vestments, badges of honor, whistles, and medical licenses, but no more. As a leader in childhood sex abuse litigation, we have the experience, resources and steadfast commitment to see justice done.

Facts on Childhood Sex Abuse

In the United States, 10 percent of all children experience some form of sexual abuse and 90 percent know their assaulter. Sadly, the U.S. Department of Justice estimates that only 31 percent of sexual assault cases are reported to authorities. But recent laws now permit survivors of sexual abuse, even from several years before, to seek justice.

The Effects of Childhood Sex Abuse

The damage of childhood sexual abuse lasts well into adulthood, but victims have been unable to seek justice. Many survivors who spoke up in childhood were ignored, while others who waited to report the abuse found their complaints time-barred. Still, some victims in their 50s and 60s are just now uncovering repressed childhood sexual abuse. Fortunately, new laws may allow justice to be served.

Adult Victims of Sexual Assault

Adult victims of sexual assault suffer for decades after the abuse occurred. They may be able to file civil lawsuits against those who facilitated the abuse, including employers, corporations or organizations. Some examples of institutional adult sexual abuse include universities, prisons, ride share services, churches, military branches, hospitals and more. You can still file a civil case and obtain justice even if your attacker was not convicted of a crime. However, the statute of limitations for adult victims may be much shorter than that for child victims. If you or a loved one survived sexual assault, you should contact an attorney immediately.

Resources for Victims of Sex Abuse

Victims of sexual assault and sexual abuse may experience trauma for decades. Fortunately, there are many resources available for them. From immediate assistance to long-term mental health help, the aid available in Hawaii and nationally is extensive. Visit our survivors resource page for more information.

Frequent Settings of Assault

The damage of sexual abuse within trusted institutions that we depend on is resounding. For children, their complaints may have been ignored or silenced as children, while others were time-barred because they waited until adulthood to report the abuse. Adults have found their trust violated when institutions like employers or hospitals failed to protect them from sexual violence. These survivors are able to get justice for the traumatic impact of sexual abuse. Some frequent settings of sexual assault include:

Church Sex Abuse

Church outings, activities, events, and ministry all pose opportunities by which young parishioners can be victimized. Headlines are rife with examples of church sexual abuse stemming from the Catholic Church, Southern Baptist Church, United Methodist Church and more. If you or a loved one is a survivor of clergy abuse, our team will fight for your rights.

Sexual Assault At Scouting and Other Organizations

Organizations parents trust to provide educational and recreational enrichment for their children can also act as dangerous situations for child sexual abuse. Parents never anticipate that camping, after-school projects or mentorship could lead to their child being victimized. If you or a loved one has experienced abuse while participating in scouting or another extracurricular organization, our legal team will advocate for you.

Organized Sports Sex Abuse

Youth sports instill physical and social skills on the playing field. However, between 2 and 8 percent of youth athletes encounter sexual assault. In 98 percent of these incidents, the abusers are coaches, teachers, or instructors. Our experienced team will fight to obtain justice for you or your loved one who was a victim of sexual abuse while participating in organized sports.

Sex Abuse At School

Educational institutions are cornerstones of formative development for children, and schools and daycares must be places where children feel and are safe. However, many predators have violated that by exploiting the children entrusted to them. Call us today if you or a loved one was sexually abused by an educator or school staff member.

Sexual Assault During Medical Treatment

Medical professionals such as doctors, dentists, and hospital staff are entrusted to treat their patients with respect as they provide medical care. Violating that trust by sexual assault is a serious breach of medical ethics and the law. Call us today if you or a loved one was sexually abused by a medical professional.

Sexual Abuse Related to the Workplace Sex Abuse

Employers have a duty to protect their workers from sexual assault. People who experienced sexual abuse or harassment in the workplace or at the hands of a coworker or boss deserve justice. It’s not just the perpetrator who can be brought to justice, but the employer may also have violated its responsibility to protect the worker. Reach out for a free case review if you experienced sexual assault related to the workplace.

Ridesharing Sexual Assault

Companies such as Lyft and Uber may have failed to protect customers from sexual assault by not providing adequate safeguards. This kinds of abuse can include harassment, battery, rape or attempted rape by drivers. If you or a loved one experienced abuse at the hands of a rideshare driver, please contact us today.
