Kentucky Derby

Kentucky is the thirty-seventh largest state geographically and is ranked twenty-sixth in terms of population. Kentucky’s soil has fostered the livestock and agricultural industries. However, Kentucky is not entirely agricultural or rural. Kentucky is home to many industries that unfortunately routinely exposed workers to asbestos on the job.

Asbestos was used in a variety of ways in Kentucky. One source of asbestos exposure is found in the power plant industry. Workers were exposed to asbestos while using equipment that contained heat-resistant asbestos.

Another potential source is the automobile industry. Asbestos was used as a raw material in a variety of automotive products. Examples include brakes, clutches, and gaskets.

Other sources of asbestos exposure in Kentucky included the construction industry and home insulation products. Unfortunately, many Kentucky workers also brought asbestos home on their clothing without realizing it. The family members of these workers were exposed to asbestos at home and are at risk of mesothelioma.

MESOTHELIOMA IN KENTUCKY

Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer of the lining of the lungs and abdomen, which is caused by asbestos exposure. Like other asbestos diseases, mesothelioma has a long latency period. This means that a person usually develops mesothelioma after the initial exposure to asbestos – usually between 10 and 50 years later. Due to this latency period, the number of Kentucky mesothelioma deaths continues to rise.

According to the federal government, 169 Kentucky residents died of mesothelioma between 1999-1004. In comparison to other states, Kentucky ranks 27th in the number of mesothelioma deaths.
