Hawaii Has Too Many Pedestrian Fatalities
Hawaii experienced an alarming increase in pedestrian deaths in 2010. In a six week period in October and November 2010, five pedestrians were killed. As of the end of November, Oahu alone suffered 17 pedestrian fatalities. The statewide total of 19 pedestrian deaths nearly doubled the 10 pedestrian deaths in 2009. In 2008, there were 14 pedestrian deaths.
Alarming Pedestrian Fatality Statistics In U.S.
Almost 5,000 pedestrians are killed and 78,000 pedestrians are seriously injured in traffic accidents each year in the United States. Pedestrians simply do not have a chance against large, fast-moving vehicles. Even slow-moving vehicles cause major injuries to pedestrians due to the significant mass of the vehicle, and the solid composition of steel in comparison to the human body.
Driver Inattention Harms Pedestrians
Pedestrian accidents are primarily caused by driver inattention. Drivers simply do not obey the traffic laws or are distracted, such as by mobile phone use. Pedestrians are also killed or seriously injured by drunk drivers. The overwhelming majority of pedestrian accidents are preventable.
Crosswalks Do Not Prevent Pedestrian Accidents
It is never safe to assume that merely being in a crosswalk provides protection. A majority of pedestrians fatalities over the past few years occurred in marked crosswalks. Hawaii’s most vulnerable citizens, children and the elderly, are disproportionately represented in these tragic statistics. Drivers need to be especially cautious of pedestrians who enter crosswalks in the middle of blocks. If a motorist heading in the same direction next to you stops mid-block, there is likely a pedestrian crossing the street. Drivers must also exercise great care when driving in residential or school areas. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, half of all pedestrian accidents involving children occur between the hours of 3:00 and 4:00 p.m., when school has just concluded.

- Young woman crossing Farrington Highway in the dark, not in a cross walk, because the closest cross walk to her bus stop had been closed off by a construction company. Our client’s family was awarded a large settlement which is confidential.
